The Problem With “Bringing Yourself” On Vacation

When you are so stressed with work, bills, family life, personal issues, and any other hardships that might be bothering you, you might dream about how great a vacation would be, where you can leave your troubles behind.

Your vacation place of preference could be somewhere warm to relax with white sands and blue oceans or snow covered peaks where you can be revitalized, skiing and enjoying winter sports if that’s more your thing.  You look forward to sleeping late in the morning and turning off your alarm clock, your phone and removing yourself from the constant stream of social media. How blissful it would be to take a break from your issues and from life in general? How perfect would that be, to take time out for a week or two?

The anticipation of this great holiday is s so exciting. Although this sounds so wonderful you still have to spend precious time on your computer or cell phone, researching which wonderful resort or hotel to destress at. You have the added stress of shopping for the clothes and items you will need and then the packing which also is not fun as you are probably still juggling your work and other responsibilities before you leave.

You are now all packed and ready to go on your way to the airport, thinking about how wonderful this much, needed vacation will be. You arrive at the hotel and the staff is there to welcome you with the signature welcome cocktail, and you take a deep breath and think “amazing!”.

The only problem with this little escape is that you “bring yourself with” on this vacation.  What does this mean? Although you have physically taken yourself away from your home and any troubling situations, you did not leave your thoughts behind. It is not possible to turn your mind off with an on or off button.  You have spent all this money, taken time off work to enjoy this vacation and you might really enjoy not having to cook and clean for the time you are away, but the bad news is that you are still stuck with yourself. Your financial worries, your family issues, your bills and the personal issues will all still be waiting for you upon your return.

So what to do? My suggestion is to take the time away, spending the first few days switching off and relaxing. Try some yoga, gentle exercises and even meditation to clear your head. Practicing mindfulness is the new buzz word but it can really help. When you are feeling refreshed physically, you can take a look at your life and situation more easily and with less emotion. Take some time then to work on plans and possible solutions going forward. Take notes on what you can do to improve things, whether it be relations, finances or other issues. Make a list of friends, professionals or other people who might be able to help you through difficulties.

Once you have done this you won’t feel so anxious and even helpless and you will be able to enjoy the last of your vacation feeling positive

Taking “yourself along” on your vacation might be difficult initially but with relaxation and careful planning you will return home refreshed, energized and ready to make positive changes going forward.

Happy travels!
