Why is it that happiness does not last forever? When you are on an emotional high the world is perfect, your life is perfect. You do not believe this feeling will ever end; perhaps happiness can last forever…until it doesn’t.
How about the phrase “happily ever after”, which is how every fairy tale ends? It instills in us at a young age that there is such a thing as happiness forever. Until we grow up and realize that happiness is just a moment, and when that moment is gone happiness becomes a memory.
The same applies to sadness, when you are down in the dumps and feel like nothing is going your way. We tend to wallow in our misery, watch a sad movie or turn on a sad song. We’ve all heard the saying “misery loves company”, well we are certainly adding to our misery by seeking out other sad things to keep our misery company. We believe we will just be sad forever. Of course we eventually snap out of it and that sadness just becomes a moment in our lives. When that moment is over, it becomes a sad memory.
We are all human trying to figure out our emotions and deal with life as best we can.
I came across this quote and thought it was rather fitting:
“If you want happiness for an hour — take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day — go fishing.
If you want happiness for a year — inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime — help someone else.”
Chinese Proverb
Helping someone else by smiling at someone to brighten their day, praising someone or even volunteering to assist others in an official or unofficial capacity can really lift one’s spirits and help one to look outside oneself. This is definitely an excellent way to feel good about oneself and subsequently feel happy.
So next time you are happy or sad or any other emotion in between, remember it won’t last forever. This too shall pass! We are all emotional human beings, so just accept that happiness and sadness can be fleeting. Know that it won’t last forever but certainly do enjoy the happy moments. In times of sadness, look outside of yourself…give a helping hand to others and begin to feel the warmth that comes with feeling good again.
